Welcome to YA Scavenger Hunt! I’m Annie Sullivan, author of A Touch of Gold (about the cursed daughter of King Midas who has deadly gold powers and faces pirates and thieves on her quest to retrieve her father’s stolen gold) and Tiger Queen (about a desert princess who has to fight in an arena against suitors to win her right to rule).
This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors…and a chance to win some awesome prizes! On this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author, you also get a clue for the hunt. Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize–one lucky winner will receive one book from each author on the hunt in my team! But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online for 120 hours!

Exclusive Content!
As part of the YA Scavenger Hunt, I am hosting Marieke Nijkamp on my website! Marieke Nijkamp is a storyteller, dreamer, globe-trotter, geek. She is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of This Is Where It Ends and Before I Let Go (Sourcebooks Fire), editor of the YA anthology Unbroken (FSG) and writer of The Oracle Code (DC Ink).
Bonus Content from Marieke:
I always said I wouldn’t write medieval historical fiction. As a medievalist, the very thought terrified me, because if my graduate degree had taught me anything, it was how much I didn’t know. The European middle ages were such a vibrant, wonderful era, and I didn’t think I could ever do it justice.
I never intended to write stories about my hometowns either, for much the same reason.
Then a story happened. A story about dragons and magic and love. A story that’s a love letter to a city that holds part of my heart. A story that’s mostly entirely historical (with a few small liberties).
I wrote The Day The Dragon Came for my UNBROKEN: 13 STORIES STARRING DISABLED TEENS, an anthology that means the absolute world to me. (It just celebrated its first birthday, so if you haven’t read it yet, pick it up and spread the word!)
Since the anthology came out, I had the chance to go back to the city where the story takes place, for the first time in years. So I figured I’d share a few pictures, so you can get some glimpses of the Ghent Alix and Delfin would have known (give or take some 642 years).
“Ghent was the biggest city of the Low Countries, but it clearly meant to be bigger still. Buildings were crammed onto every inch of the hills. Spires and towers peeked over the walls. Even from a distance, Delfin would have sword he heard the sound of construction, smelled the wood and stone.”
“With a hobble in her step, Alix moved along the warehouses at the Grass Quay, along the Leie and the crowded docks, along the winding streets, until she reached the tanners’ guild house at the corner of the market square.”
“He walked the street that wound its way down to the towers of Saint Jan and Saint Niklaas, because he knew what he would find right between the two towers: a third. After almost seventy years, the Belfry was nearly finished.”
“She walked until the sun set behind the towers, and bats took to the sky. Until she found a spot of darkness underneath the bridge that connected the inner city with the castle grounds.”
Of course, I wish I had pictures of the magic spells referenced in the story too. Those are somewhat ahistorical. Which is to say, I smudged the dates a bit there—the spells were actually found near Ghent about half a century after the dragon came—but I can assure you, they are quite real. I read them.
And the dragon? Well, it’s still perched on the Belfry, where it watches and guards the city as it has for the past 650 years.
(It even breathes fire. On occasion.)
About UNBROKEN:
Warrior. Actor. Friend. Heroine. Traveler. Sister. Magician. Lover. Biker.
In this stunning anthology, #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marieke Nijkamp teams up with fellow disabled authors to create a collection of fictional stories that dispense with the tired, broken stereotypes–and reclaim narratives and identities.
By weaving together tales of interstellar war, an enchanted carnival, or a dating debacle, Unbroken celebrates the varied experiences of disabled teens, including teens of color and of diverse genders and orientations, without obscuring the realities of their disabilities. At turns hilarious and heart-stopping, these short stories share a common thread—one that has bent over time, but will never break.
